Pilates is a method of body conditioning and movement training that focuses on six vital principles. Concentration, control, centre, flow, precision and breathing.

It was originally developed by Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) during the early to mid 1900’s. First in Germany and later he and his wife Clara opened a fitness studio in New York City where they shared an address with The New York City Ballet. He called his method, “Contrology”. People, including many performing artists, flocked to his New York studio to heal injuries, build strength, flexibility, function and a profound sense of embodied focus. By the time of opening his New York studio in 1926, he had developed and built several specialized apparatus involving wood or metal frames, springs of varied tensions, pulleys, etc.

The fields of movement, body conditioning, strength training, somatics have evolved enormously in the last century. The zeitgeist when Joseph Pilates was developing his body of research included other cutting edge somatic luminaries as Ida Rolf (1896-1979), Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955), Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), Mabel Elsworth Todd (1880-1956), and Lulu Swiegard (1895-1974). Whether the newer generations of Pilates teachers know this or not, they have also been influenced by, among others, the protégé of these creative, boldly inquisitive and scientific minds. As our approaches to embodiment and physical training evolve Pilates still stands strong as a viable physical syllabus that supports professional athletes and dancers as well as a form of rehabilitation for all walks of human life. An experienced instructor is skilled at appropriately adapting the Pilates exercise syllabus and creatively approaching their clients needs and goals. More and more physiotherapy clinics now use Pilates equipment.
