Birth Support

is an ongoing course offered according to demand. There are usually 1-5 people in the class.

It is usually on Wednesday at 7pm but that can also change to accommodate schedules.

Odette is a home birth doula and is a proponent of peaceful physiological birth. She has been practicing the many limbs of yoga since 1987. Her children were born peacefully at home and are now adults.

Regardless of where you choose to birth this course will deeply support you and give you the tools to trust your body, your baby, your personal agency, your voice and so much more.

What does natural birth mean to you?

If you ask someone who has attended many births and/or birthed their own child(ren) peacefully and without intervention you will get a very different answer than from someone who has had very little exposure to birth other than their own arrival or who has only heard about birth through Hollywood and mass media. Most people don’t even contemplate birth to any depth until they are ready to have children. Most people don’t think about what a profound imprint birth is for each individual as well as for society at large. Our transitions in and out are far more than simple bookends to our life.

Even different generations of women are likely to articulate differently what natural birth is.

The culture you grow up in also affects your feelings about and approach to birth.

Physiological birth alludes to the metaphor that when we create a garden, the right environmental circumstances need to be in place. We don’t poke and prod a blooming flower to make sure that the blossom will emerge. We don’t test them with foreign frequencies. We know that, with the right amount of sunshine, water, nourishment from the soil, space that the blossom will undoubtedly emerge. Even though we know approximately when the blossom will emerge we can’t know the exact time and place of its emerging. Nature has its own intelligence and perfect timing.

Although there is sometimes and rarely a place for drugs and surgery in the birth process, Odette’s model of support for all her clients is based on traditional practices that date back through millenia to traditional ways and, arguably, Indigenous birth practices. The foundation of her work and philosophy is that birth is a safe, natural, physiological, joyful process. When adhered to in the right environment, spirit and in right relationship, all goes smoothly and well.

Birth is part of the continuum in the process of loving creation that we all have access to.

Honouring birth is an honouring of the sacred waters of life.

– Odette Slater

Odette is certified through Wise Woman Way of Birth.

She came to birth work after a career in dance, a broken leg that radically shifted her course and two very different, joyful, home births at the ages of 35 and 43.

“As a mother, a grandmother, an auntie, a sister, a great cook, a gardener, a seed saver, I love to sing, dance, read, drum, laugh, write, feel deeply, and so much more.

I could call myself a doula, but doula means slave in Greek and that doesn’t sit right with me.

I learn something new from every person, plant, animal, medicine that I am present with.

I consider myself an educator. Educate means “to draw out”. To paraphrase that, I share the tools and information for connecting with one’s inner self, one’s gut feelings, one’s intuition or whatever else you might name that indisputable inner knowing. In the medical domain the freedom to choose is sometimes called informed consent but it can also be called informed refusal.

Among other areas of influence I teach at Lumara Society supporting families in deep grief and at BC Womens Hospital supporting women struggling with mental health and addiction.

No one is immune to grief and trauma. No one is immune to profound healing.

I look forward to connecting with you in your journey of unfolding.
